The thing about owning your own business is that your job is never done. It's 12:30am on our third Friday night in San Diego and I am at my computer working on our website. Why? Because it needed to be done, and when you are working for yourself there is no one else to do it. We needed to update our portfolio, incorporate our social network accounts, clean up our language and give everything a good going over. And after some beer and pizza and late hours we are finally coming close. The images in the portfolio gallery and slide-shows still need to be tagged and we need to keep polishing our SEO for San Diego but all in all not a bad night's work.
There are some times (like late on a Friday night when all your friends are out doing something cool) when I think it would be nicer to work for someone else. Let someone else worry about finding clients, manning the phones and the last-minute fixes. To collect a check every Friday and head off to happy-hour with the gang. To not feel like every moment not spent working on a client project needs to be spent on promoting ID Creative. To not feel like I need to network everywhere I go (swear to god, I brought my business cards to a bridal shower 2 weekends ago), to shut my brain off once in a while.
But then Monday morning comes around, and I watch everyone else get in their cars and head to their offices, cubicles, and sales counters and I go to the beach with my iPhone to read my emails, make my phone calls and plan for the week...and that makes it all worth it. I'm a small business owner, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
